Craig a COLOURlovers member & book lover sent in a picture of his bookshelf and it is an amazing display of color organization. "We organized our bookshelves in honor of the Rainbow Snake of Australian mythology. The book spine spectrum zig-zags from left to right, then right to left, and so forth." Click here to see a full size picture of his colorful bookshelf.
My books are all over the place and so are my magazines... I suppose I should invest in a big bookshelf like Craig has and create a colorful book wall, but right now keeping my closet color organized is enough of a challenge. When I am not on the road all the time I usually organize my closet to have clothes in color order from dark to light colors, grouped in jackets, button down shirts to t-shirts.
Do you organize things by color?
Do you have a picture of it?

Oh! how amazing. I must try this out. At the moment I organize my collection of children's books by height, as it makes it easy to vacuum the dust off the tops of them - they make a smooth slope. Also makes it easier to find them, as I always remember how tall a book was and know where to look. What a boring thing to do! Worse than alphabetical.

I'd like to see that, klip. Could you photograph it?
That's a really great looking bookshelf. Go Craig. And thanks for sending in.

I once organized my CD collection (about 350 of them) by colour. It took longer than strictly seemly, and I could not find anything with any speed. Now I can dump them onto my hard drive, so access isn't such a consideration. I should think about doing it again.

I would try to organize my closet by color but I tend to wear mostly black shirts so the other color shirts I do have wouldn't be much to organize. I am getting better and buying color. Everyone at my work jokes about how the only colors in my life are black and denim. Then I laugh a little because I'm pretty sure I got the color part of my life well under control.
I really, really love that book case, what a wonderful idea.

there's a bunch of teacher i go out with every friday after school. we drink beer and celebrate the weekend. one time, sitting out on the patio of the place where we go, it was gorgeous weather. i noticed that everyone there was wearing a solid coloured shirt, and every colour in the colour wheel was represented. the sun on all those colourful shirts was more than i could stand. i made everyone get up and change seats until they were in the correct order. they all willingly complied with my "silly art thing", but only a few understood what i was doing until i explained.
they stayed in order for the rest of the evening, too. :D
i wish i had taken a picture.
the rest of my life is pretty colour organized, too, but few understand my system. all my school stuff is colour organized. my first hour class folders are yellow, 2nd hr. green, etc.

It definitely looks great. I think mine would look strange, as I am colorblind and would have some difficulties to tell some colors apart from each other. Anyway, using color to organize things is great. I use it at the office. And it would be definitely I good idea to organize my wardrobe, as this would enhance the chance that my clothes match...

Where did you find the bookcase? I would LOVE to replace my 5 tall, skinny bookshelves with a large one like this across one wall.

The shelves are made by a company called Smart Furniture. Each self has slots, so they can be put together or taken apart for easy moving or reconfiguring. The website is SmartFurniture.com. I love everything about the shelves, though of course they don't hold coffee-table-sized tomes (which, I suppose, belong on the coffee table anyway!)
Thanks to everyone for the nice comments about my "reading rainbow"!

vipanchi, organizing makeup by color is a great idea! So many items have more than one function anyway.
